Post-Operative Instructions – Root Canal Obturation Appointment

Your obturation appointment is the final stage of root canal treatment. During this visit, the cleaned root canals are filled and sealed to prevent reinfection.

Some mild discomfort after this appointment is normal.

What to Expect

  • Mild tenderness for several days
  • Sensitivity when biting
  • Slight gum soreness near the treated tooth
  • Temporary numbness for 2–4 hours

Symptoms should steadily improve.

Pain Management

  • Take pain relief as advised by your dentist.
  • If appropriate for you, Ibuprofen (Nurofen) and/or Paracetamol (Panadol) can be taken as directed.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dosage.

Severe pain is uncommon — please contact us if this occurs.

Eating & Drinking

  • Avoid eating until numbness has worn off.
  • Avoid chewing hard foods on the treated tooth until it has been permanently restored.
  • Choose softer foods for the first few days if the area feels tender.

Permanent Restoration

Following obturation, the tooth requires a permanent restoration (often a crown) to:

  • Protect the tooth from fracture
  • Restore full strength and function
  • Provide a long-term seal against bacteria

It is important to proceed with the recommended final restoration without delay.

Oral Hygiene

  • Continue normal brushing and flossing.
  • Maintain regular dental check-ups and cleans.
